Learning from experience?

Since Naomi is my fifth child, I am no longer really a novice at basic infant care. Some things, though, I just seem not to master. Tonight, I laid my 3 1/2 month old on the couch and walked away. I know I should not lay a baby on a couch unattended, but I have four other children (and at that particular instance, 3 additional children) who don't look where they are walking, so the couch seems like a much safer place than the floor. And, no, I couldn't just hold her. I sometimes need both hands -- like when I'm trying to balance the needs of eight children ages 3 1/2 months to 7 years.

A few minutes later (at most 5), I returned to care for my baby. I found her happily talking to herself, laying on her tummy. I had left her on her back against the back of the couch. Now she was about one roll away from the back... Did she learn to roll over? Having not witnessed it, I cannot say, but it did look suspicious. All 7 children denied having moved her and I tend to believe them, since she was still happy.

I am going to consider this my lucky warning and I think I'd best not leave her on any couches, beds, chairs, etc. unattended anymore. For her sake, all of us had better learn from experience.

And, I just can't stop wondering, does she roll over?

I'd say she's rolling. Marek did that to me at 3 months and I didn't witness it for the first few times, but seeing him in different places when I know my other two kids were with me at the time sort of answered that question for me and now, at five months, he's been a happy roller, nearly crawler for some time now.

yikes you got lucky ... she's an early roller! Lindzi didn't roll until nearly 6 months...but she's a chubby one - so it was harder for her to roll all her rolls!!!

I thought you were going to say that she rolled off the couch and I was going to empathize with you because Kaya just did that the other day and I was sitting right next to her! Actually it wasn't a true roll because she kicked off of my leg and that propelled her over and off the sofa. Luckily she landed on a quilt so she was uninjured but still it was pretty surprising! (Obviously, since I didn't even realize she was rolling until she hit the floor!)

Wow, 8 kids from 3 1/2 months to 7 years running around! No wonder you laid her on the couch! I know what you mean, it's scary laying them on the floor with, at least at my house, very hyper children bouncing all over!

Yikes. I'm pretty sure I read a law that said that parents are supposed to be notified before their children make any major developments, like rolling, talking, learning to hide without giving away their hiding place... OK, so not really, but I wish!
