"You'll Shoot Your Eye Out"

Monday morning at about 4:00, Jenn and I were awaken, not by our children, but by a cat outside our window. This is not the first time that this cat has sat outside our window and meowed the worst sounding meow in order to wake all people within a 25 mile radius.
So I went to Wal-Mart to buy a BB gun. It was a little embarrassing I must admit. I know that Jenn's parents have one for the same purpose, so I figured it was OK.
You see, I am a gun owner. If I were to use my .45 on the cat, I think the neighbors would notice. I also have a .22 rifle, but Roy has it right now. I think the neighbors would notice that as well. Plus I don't want to kill the cat, I just want it to go away and never return.
I went to Wal-Mart with Michael and David, and the lady looked over the counter at Michael and said, "You know that these are recommended for ten year olds, right?" noting that the children I had with me couldn't possibly be ten yet.
Anyway, I got a Red Rider BB Gun, which reminded me of Christmas Story, "You'll shoot your eye out, kid". So far so good. I did take it to the back yard to ensure it worked and was pleasantly surprised by it's accuracy. The last time I shot one was at Cub Scout camp when I was nine. The one I shot there was the most inaccurate rifle ever. I was lucky to hit the paper, let alone the target. Or maybe I've gotten better at shooting fundamentals since technically I shoot M-16's for a living.
At the end of the day, I have a BB Gun and since the purchase, the cat hasn't come back. If it does I'll be ready. maybe the protective posture will prevent it from ever coming back. If that's the case, my sleep is more important to me than the $22.oo I spent on the rifle and BB's.

That's funny Derek. It reminds me of something my brother Richard would do. When he was on his mission he liked to torture the pigeons that landed on his apartment balcony.

My dad hates cats. He's pretty sure that at the judgement day he will be assigned to be the Keeper of the Cats as his eternal punishment.

We have a cat living in the ceiling of our garage right not... we CANNOT get it out. I don't think Tyler would be so kind as to only use a BB gun given the chance.

We must have the same blood! That rocks. I bought a bb gun a few years ago that my oldest twins love. Then last summer, we were fishing and found a dang nice, fairly new bb gun rifle left leaning against a tree! Sweet! Works great. A few years ago, my neighbor had (still does) these weiner dogs that would not stop yapping in the morning. I am like you, I have a .45, a .40, an M4, and a few other rifles, along with my bb guns. One morning, I removed the screen from my bedroom window, leaned just the end of the barrel out, and squeezed off a round at the terrorist dog. I nailed it, and had only used two pumps, you know, to get it's attention but not kill it. Problem solved, they don't yap anymore. Well, a few days later, the owner comes to me and asks if I have seen any punk teens around shooting bb guns, because he had to take his dog into the vet for a sore leg, and the vet found a bb lodged in his leg! I about freaked, I mean, here I am a state cop, doing stuff like that! hehe. I kept my mouth shut and told him I'd keep my eyes out for the rascals!

Matt,
You are my hero. I hate disturbances in the neighborhood. Way to keep your cool with your neighbor. I don't know if I would be able to do it. I like the non-lethal force that the bb gun allows me to have along with the escalation of force that I can use as back up. If the cats want to go get some friends to take me out...the .45 comes out.

So when I first read your post I thought you must have gone to Walmart right then and there...at 4 am. I thought you were crazy! But then I read that you took two of your boys along so I'm guessing you didn't pull them out of bed to do that? Anyway, I hope you scared the cat off. There are so many dogs in our neighborhood that keep us up and drive us crazy, but we're hoping to move soon so we'll invest in the bb later. We also have some rifles, but they are too hard to get to:)
Oh and Matthew, why am I not surprised at what you told your neighbor? It gave me a good laugh.
