New Car

Jenn and I have been pondering the idea of getting a new van for some time. We drive a Pontiac Montana, which is an eight passenger, nicely loaded van with plenty of space. We've been relatively lucky with maintenance over the past six or so years as we've only had to replace the usual, tires, brakes, etc over that time and one cooling fan.
My goal was to sell the van while we could still get a decent return on it and give Jenn, Lil and the kids a newer more reliable vehicle for crossing the Rockies this summer when I go to Washington. We started our car search on Monday late in the evening. We went to the Toyota dealership here in Norman. It was late, so we just talked to the dealer a bit and he showed us the van and it's features. We still wanted to see what Honda had to offer before making any decisions.
We wanted an eight passenger with dual automatic sliding doors.
We use an all military online bank, so I was looking for interest rates when I happened onto a build your new car type of deal. I started building a Toyota, and in the end, it promised $250 below MSRP if I went to a USAA (name of the bank) certified dealer. So I went to the dealer, which was located next to Tinker AFB about a 45 minute drive. We make that drive anyway to use the commissary, so no big deal.
When I got there, the dealer found out what I was looking for and started walking out toward the
vans. He didn't say anything to me, like finding out what features I was looking for.

We got to the first van and he asked if I wanted to look inside. I asked him if it had dual power sliding doors. It didn't, so he took me to another that did and repeated his original question. I asked if it was eight passenger. It wasn't. It turned out that there wasn't an eight passenger on the lot, so he wanted to order one for me.
Think of the used car salesman that is usually in the media. The gelled and slicked back hair, kinda gross looking, well, that was this guy. He needs to go to the movies and do the opposite of what he sees.
I told him that I was familiar with the Sienna, and wanted to talk about cost. An hour later, we still weren't talking about money. Jenn finished shopping at the commissary and came over and we finally got to the price tag to include the USAA discount.
I wasn't that impressed with what they were offering still plus they were including our old van as a trade-in. They wanted to give us $2500 for the van, when I know I can sell it for 7-9 thousand. Wasn't happening!

Then when Jenn told them that she had no intention of buying a car that day, the salesman went into this long dragged out deal about how reliable Toyota's are and went into every mechanical feature that it had. Thirty minutes later, Jenn got up and left. The dealership gave me one lower final offer, and I left.
The next day I tried calling them to talk again, but they would promise to call me back and then they wouldn't do it.
Jenn and I went to test drive a Honda Oddesey, but it lacked one feature beyond being more expensive. The middle seat in the middle row isn't built to hold a car seat. No thank you! Depending on the state, Jonathan still needs a booster, there is no way we were willing to have a seat that was off limits to a child in a car seat, especially that particular seat.
So we went to back to the original Toyota dealer. They still weren't being pushy like the other dealership. We talked about numbers, and they agreed to let us see the invoice and sell the car for $500 above the invoice price including 1.9% financing. So we decided to go for it, only to find out that they showed us the wrong invoice. The van we were looking at was more loaded than the invoice they showed us. They still honored the original agreement and we ended up getting the van for only $270 above invoice. So now we own a Toyota Sienna, and I drive a Toyota Corolla as a commuter car. We're an all Toyota family.
We're happy, this is the first new car that either of us have ever had, so now comes the task of selling our old van.

Joanna,
I hope it does some day. If your interested, I have an 8 seater that is going for (family discount) 6000. I don't know how we'll get it to Utah, but there you have it.
Kellyann,
If you knew what we went through with our last van you would know where we were comming from. Plus the part of the story I didn't tell, was that my friend just started selling cars and gave me some tips.
Lil, by the time I get back from Washington, you'll have put more miles on that van than I will have by about 700%. I'll make it up as I'm going to California and back to Oklahoma though.

Good job! Love having new car smell! Toyotas are good cars! I drive a Lexus IS350 (aka. fancy Toyota) and love it! My husband is the master at buying cars. He never ceases to amaze me and the deals he can work. I guess it's thanks to being Syrian and having bartering be a way of life!

Congrats on the new van! Like everyone else, I wish we could get one too. Oh well. I'm sure we'll just drive ours into the ground first. It's probably almost there.

By the way, Jenn (and Derek you are welcome to do it too) on my blog I tagged you so if you want you can check it out for the directions.

That is a nice looking van! Fun, fun! I like that they make them with 8 seats. Ours seats 7, and since we are a family of 7, we fill ours up! (No room to bring anyone extra along!)

The eight passenger was what we were looking for first and foremost. We could deal without automatic sliding doors and some other features, but Jenn will give birth to number five any day now, which will leave us with only one extra seat. We'll let you know if we plan to fill it later.

Sounds like you know how to deal. I learned long ago that I would never buy a car until I was dealing with the top manager at the dealership. I even called one dealer from another dealership and got the deal I was after. I kind of enjoy the challenge.

Good for you! I hate car shopping though. It brings out the absolute worst in me. They pulled the same old bait and switch they tried on you with the invoices on us too when we bought our Malibu. I had to get rather vocal to get them to honor the original agreement. We didn't get out of there til 10:30 at night. I am glad you got a nice new van though!

You're van looks nice. Spencer and I are driving two cars everywhere right now because we don't want to have two car payments, so until our house sells and we pay off our Honda, we aren't buying a new one. It's such a pain, but oh well. Let's just pray the house sells soon so we can go van shopping! And when that time comes, I'll be expecting some good tips:)

It's really not all that complicated to buy a new car. You wait until the economy stats to fall apart like it is now and don't play games with the dealership. I tell them to their face that I realize that they are a business, but I want as much money in my bank account as they want in theirs. I won't give them anything unless they level with me.
And never fall for the question about monthly payments or the final price on the car. A lot of dealers will ask which is more important to you. It's a loaded question. Both are equally important. I want the car to be as low out the door as possible, I want my interest rates to be as low as possible too. If I can afford it, I'll pay more per month in order to get a shorter term on my loan and thus pay less interest and more principal every month. Just be blunt and honest and you will win, don't be afraid to walk away if your not getting what you want.

Of course I can't wait 'til the day I get to go shopping for a bigger vehicle... but I am really enjoying not having car or truck payments right now. So we're praying that they hold out for a very long time! :)
